Roma (Rome)

Having spent three weeks going from one beautiful Italian town to another, I expected Rome to be somewhat anti-climactic.

I was pleasantly surprised. The size, scope, scale and beauty of its art, architecture and urban layout is magnificent. To gaze at and ponder on Augustus' palace, the Forum's basilica and the dome of St. Peter's, one is struck by awe of the power, wealth and grandeur of the Roman Empire and its people.

The Romans built on a scale that is not even conceivable today. I was forced to consider the fate of our own world, if such a civilization as that of the Romans could fall.
